2011 MAC Football Picks - Week #8 Preview

MAC Notes:

  • Northern Illinois quarterback Chandler Harnish rushed for 229 yards and threw for 203 yards and accounted for 432 yards of total offense in a 51-22 win over Western Michigan, marking only the 11th time in FBS history for a quarterback to rush and throw for over 200 yards in the same game.
  • Temple junior running back Bernard Pierce set five school records in a 34-0 win over Buffalo. Pierce rushed for 152 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Ohio wide receiver LaVon Brazill became the school’s all-time career leader with 151 receptions; Brazill had eight catches for 157 yards and two touchdowns in a 23-20 loss to Ball State.
  • BGSU kick returner Boo Boo Gates had four kick returns for 152 yards, including an 88-yard touchdown return in the fourth quarter in a 28-21 loss to Toledo.
  • A dramatic 30-yard touchdown run by EMU QB quarterback Alex Gillett with just 37 seconds left in the game broke a 28-28 tie to give Eastern Michigan a 35-28 win over Central Michigan. The Eagles held what looked like a safe 28-13 lead with 5:39 left in the game, but Central Michigan came back to score 15 unanswered points to tie the game at 28-28 with 1:09 left.
  • Toledo ’s Morgan Williams rushed for 136 yards with three touchdowns and the injury-riddled Rocket defense came up big twice inside the red zone as Toledo defeated arch-rival Bowling Green.
  • Ball State RB Jahwan Edwards rushed for a career high 123 yards with one score to lead Ball State to a 23-20 at Ohio.
  • Eastern Michigan RB Dominique White had 161 yards and one score in a 35-28 win at Central Michigan. The Eagles totaled a season-best 350 yards rushing.
  • Central Michigan QB Ryan Radcliff threw for 351 yards and three scores in a 35-28 loss to Eastern Michigan. Radcliff rallied the Chippewas tossing two scores and completing a two-point conversion pass in the final four minutes to tie the score at 28-28.
  • Western Michigan WR Jordan White set a new school record with his fifth-straight game with 10 or more catches hauling in 12 receptions for 98 yards in a 51-22 loss at Northern Illinois.

…Nick’s Picks went 3-3 last week and now stand at 55-15 on the season…

This Week’s Games:

Saturday, October

  • Northern Illinois at Buffalo, Noon ET; (ESPN Plus/ESPN Game Plan/ESPN3)
  • Western Michigan at Eastern Michigan, 1:00 pm ET
  • Central Michigan at Ball State, 2:00 pm ET
  • Ohio at Akron, 3:30 pm ET; (SportsTime Ohio/ESPN Game Plan/ESPN3)
  • Temple at Bowling Green, 3:30 pm ET (BCSN/ESPN3)
  • Miami at Toledo, 7:00 pm ET (BCSN/ESPN3)

Nick's Picks:

Northern Illinois (4-3, 2-1 MAC) at Buffalo (2-5, 1-2 MAC)

Saturday, October 22, 2011 • Noon ET • Buffalo, N.Y. • UB Stadium (29,013)

ESPN Plus • ESPN Game Plan • ESPN3

Series: Northern Illinois leads 6-1

Nick’s Pick: Northern 42 – Buffalo 17

Comment: UB is getting a very hot Huskie club coming to town just one week after the Bull’s dreadful performance in Philadelphia. NIU put up nearly 700 yards of offense last week and are priming up for their upcoming battle with Toledo for the MAC west title.

Western Michigan (4-3, 2-1 MAC) at Eastern Michigan (4-3, 2-1 MAC)

Saturday, October 22, 2011 • 1:00 pm ET • Ypsilanti, Mich. • Rynearson Stadium (30,200)

Streamed live via ww.mac-sports.com

Series: Western Michigan leads 29-15-2

Nick’s Pick: Western 21 – Eastern 20

Comment: If the MAC Coach of the Year honor was voted on right now, Eastern’s Ron English would easily win it. Eastern won their first two games over FCS teams but no one expected them to be 4-3/2-1 at this stage of the season. The Eagles believe they can win, and they just might since Western is the Jekle/Hyde team of the league this year.

Central Michigan (2-5, 1-2 MAC) at Ball State (4-3, 2-1 MAC)

Saturday, October 22, 2011 • 2:00 pm ET • Muncie, Ind. • Schuemann Stadium (22,500)

Streamed live via www.mac-sports.com

Series: Series tied 21-21-1

Nick’s Pick: Ball State 31 – Central 28

Comment: The Cardinals are winning the close games this season under first year head coach Pete Lembo while the Chips program seems to be free-falling under Dan Enos. Ball State has converted 23-of-23 trips inside the Red Zone this season and tied for first in the country in Red Zone efficiency.

Ohio (4-3, 1-2 MAC) at Akron (1-5, 0-2 MAC)

Saturday, October 22, 2011 • 3:30 pm ET • Akron, Ohio • InfoCision Stadium--Summa Field (27,881)

SportsTime Ohio • Comcast Indiana • ESPN Game Plan • ESPN3

Series: Ohio leads 14-12-1

Nick’s Pick: Ohio 24 – Akron 16

Comment: After losing two in a row the Bobcats really needed to have Akron this week to get back on track.

Temple (5-2, 3-1 MAC) at Bowling Green (3-4, 1-2 MAC)

Saturday, October 22, 2011 • 3:30 pm ET • Bowling Green, Ohio • Doyt L. Perry Stadium (24,000)

Series: Bowling Green leads 7-4

Nick’s Pick: Temple 33 – BGSU 21

Comment: Toledo showed last week that you beat the Falcons by running the ball and Temple runs the ball very well averaging nearly 260-yards per game on the ground, tops in the MAC.

Miami (2-4, 1-1 MAC) at Toledo (4-3, 3-0 MAC)

Saturday, October 22, 2011 • 7:00 pm ET • Toledo, Ohio • Glass Bowl (26,248)

Series: Miami leads 28-21-1

Nick’s Pick: Toledo 27 – Miami 21

Comment: Don’t be fooled by Miami’s record, this is a talented team that hasn’t hit their stride yet under first year head coach Don Treadwell. Miami always seems to give Toledo fits and rarely are these contests one-sided. Look for a tight game that goes down to the wire.
