2007 Akron Zips Football Preview

Akron Zips

2007 Akron Overview

The Zips return four starters on offense that under performed last season and averaged just 20-points per outing. Replacing QB Luke Getsy is the biggest challenge so Coach JD Brookhart is looking for Carlton Jackson, Chris Jacquemain or Sean Hakes to become “the guy” and lead the offense this fall. Running back Dennis Kennedy has all-conference potential and there are playmakers at RB and WR. Jabari Arthur should prove to be the go-to receiver this fall while Akron may post some of the best talent at TE anywhere behind Kris Kasperek, Merce Poindexter, Jose Cruz and Brian Flaherty. The offensive line will need to do better than last year’s output of 84-yards per game which ranked 111 th nationally. Chris Kemme has star potential up front. Defensively, Akron was solid against the run and pass last year ranking 44 th nationally in total defense. Eight starters return, including the entire LB corps. Reggie Corner and Davanzo Tate form a solid CB duo. Brookhart has recruited well along the defensive line and there is good size up front. The kicking game continues to be an area of emphasis for this coaching staff. If David Harvey returns to the team this fall, he is one of the top return specialists in the country. In a very competitive east division with no real front runner, Akron has as good of a shot at any to win the east division this year.

Mark it Down!
After upsetting NC State last season for the program’s first real solid non-conference win since joining the MAC in 1992, Akron will beat either UConn or Indiana this fall to make it two straight years with at least one victory over a BCS opponent. Akron will beat Army in Cleveland on September 1 as well.

Akron 2007 Schedule Analysis
Within the east division, Akron gets a break hosting both Kent State and Ohio, the two teams that will likely battle for the divisional title with the Zips. Akron received a bad draw playing both Central and Western Michigan from the west. Each is expected to seriously content for a divisional title. Within the non-conference contests, Akron travels to Ohio State, Indiana and UConn while "hosting" Army at Cleveland Browns Stadium.

Most Important Game
September 22 hosting Kent State – The winner has the inside track to the east division and this will be Akron’s first game in the Rubber Bowl. Both teams are improved and playing this rivalry game early in the year will bring a great crowd and provide a terrific game day atmosphere.
