2007 Buffalo Football Preview

Buffalo Bulls

2007 Buffalo Overview

Buffalo has never had a quality QB since joining the MAC in 1997 and returning starter Drew Willy hasn’t look the part over the previous two seasons. Naaman Roosevelt is a special talent who lined up as a WR last year. He will have his chance to compete for the starting QB role this fall and at least athletically, is an upgrade over Willy. UB’s rush offense only averaged 90-yards per game (#107 nationally) but figures to be much better this year. James Starks has the potential to become UB’s first 1,000-yard rusher in eleven years and there is solid depth with Mario Henry, Ike Nduka and Obi Ezzema. If Roosevelt plays more WR this fall that will take away the team’s best deep threat. Terrance Breaux is another solid option at receiver. UB returns their offensive line and this unit should be much improved. Center Jamey Richard is one of the most under-exposed players in the MAC and already has NFL scouts following him. For UB’s offense to have more success, the O-line must protect the QB better after giving up 39 sacks last season. DE Trevor Scott is a star in the making after recording 9 QB sacks and 45 tackles for loss last season. Scott has the potential to be a first day NFL draft pick in March 2008. With most of their defensive front returning, expect UB not to resemble their 185-yard per game rush defense of 2006. The biggest concern for Buffalo’s defense is its LB corps which graduated Ramon Guzman and Jeff Bublavi. Ollice Ervin is the only LB with significant experience and there is limited depth. There are no question marks with the defensive backs who return all four starters and several other solid prospects. CB Andre Evans and FS Kareem Byrom lead the way while two highly regarded true freshmen will content to playing time this year, Josh Copeland and Davonte Shannon. Ben Woods is one of the better punters in the league while PK Gerry McGroaty returns after missing last season with an ankle injury. Overall, Buffalo continues to improve and continues to become more competitive but victories have been few and far between. In the last five seasons, UB is just 7-51. This will be another one or two win season for the Bulls but they will have fewer blow-out losses than years past.

Mark it Down!
This publication is going to step out on a limb and pick Buffalo to beat Baylor at home on September 22. Why not? Baylor has been a bottom feeder for years now in the Big 12 and will most certainly overlook UB the week before playing Texas A&M. Baylor is looking at their 12 th straight losing season. Against similar competition, Baylor has struggled over the past few years against Army, Texas State and Sam Houston State. The Bulls just may pull the shocker and beat a Big 12 team this fall.

2007 UB Schedule Analysis
Non-conference road games are against Rutgers, Penn State and Syracuse while UB gets a rare chance to host a Big 12 team – Baylor. Crossover games are Ball State and for the first time in their ten-year MAC existence, UB will host Toledo. Within the division, the Bulls get a nice break hosting Ohio, Akron and BG while traveling to Miami, Kent State and Temple.

Most Important Game
Visiting Temple on September 8 – The lone UB win last season was Temple and that may be the case again in 2007. There are very few chances for the Bulls to get a win with this schedule and early in the season in Philadelphia may be their only chance.
