2005 MAC Football Recruiting - CMU Chippewas

Central Michigan signed 24 student athletes with a balanced class of 12 offensive players, 11 defensive players and one specialist coming from five different states. Emphasis on offense was QB and RB while the defensive emphasis was on DBs. Overall there is tremendous speed within this class and all will be incoming freshmen with no JUCOs. Seven players are from Michigan and Texas, five from Illinois, three from Florida and two from Georgia. Kicking specialist Rick Albreski from Glendale Heights, IL finished his career as the nationís 3rd all-time leading kicker in points and 4th all-time leader in field goals made (44). CMU signed 6 of Michiganís top-50 players with Adam Antonides from Lapeer being the highest rated.

Top Player - Sean Price, QB

  • Two-time All-State
  • State record career 8,267 passing yards with 93 TDs and only 17 INTs
  • Illinois "Player of the Year" by the Champaign News
  • Offers from Illinois and other MAC schools
  • Top-40 player in Illinois

  • Sean Price was one of three QBs signed by Coach Brian Kelly. Others are Duane Brooks, a multi-talented athlete who threw 43 career TDs with just 5 INTs in his career. Dan LeFevour tossed 24 TDs and ran for 29 more. All will be given an opportunity to contribute right away as true freshmen.
  • Aaron Carr from Grand Prairie, Texas, was one of six DBs signed. He had multiple offers from WAC & Conference USA schools and canceled his visit to Toledo and committed immediately to Central after his official visit to Mount Pleasant. SS Sam Williams received late interest from Michigan State and Minnesota while Antraz Burton had offers from most of the MAC schools. All players listed have reported sub 4.5/40 speed.
  • CMU brought in some more "mighty-mites" like current RB Jerry Seymour who is just 5-6 195 pounds. Anthony Boykins averaged over 8-yards per carry and has 4.3/40 speed, stands just 5-8 180. Cliff Gilliam also has reported 4.3/40 speed and has excelled in track as well as football. Illinois native Ontario Sneed is the lone incoming back with much size at 6-foot 202.

Final Thoughts

This is an outstanding class for Brian Kelly in his first real class after getting hired late during the recruiting period last season. There is a ton of speed and good size throughout this class and it reflects the type of student athletes he will be recruiting in the future. CMU got players away from MAC powers like Toledo, BG, NIU along with some Big Ten schools. I like how he has recruited high school seniors and that there are not any junior college players added for some sort of quick fix. Coach Kelly has a plan and this class rates as EXCELLENT compared to other MAC schools as the Chippewas are closing the talent gap with the MAC heavy weights.
