2005 MAC Football Recruiting - Eastern Michigan Eagles

The Eagles signed 23 players from six states. A heavy emphasis was on their home state as 11 players were signed from Michigan. Other areas tapped were Florida (5), Ohio (3), Texas (2) and one each from Oklahoma and Indiana. Of the home-state players acquired, 10 were rated as top-50 players in Michigan, including LB Spencer Smith, a top-15 rated prospect and Terrence Blevins, a "Jerome Bettis" type of banging RB. Both could play as true freshmen this fall. Overall 14 players are initially suited for offense with nine on defense. A heavy emphasis was on both RB and DB as the coaching staff inked 5 new prospects for each position. EMU also signed 3 QBs and 4 linemen.

Top Player - Spencer Smith, OLB

  • First Team All-State with 117 tackles, 4 sacks & 3 INTs
  • Rated #14 player in state by Detroit Free Press
  • Offers from several MAC and two Big Ten schools

  • EMU signed 5 RBs in this class headlined by Terrance Blevins. Other players to note are Tim Connor from famed Cleveland Glenville and Olufemi Ogundari from Sugarland, Texas. Conner was the heart and soul of Glenville’s potent team that produced 13 DI-A players this year. He rushed for over 1,500 yards and scored 24 TDs while playing RB, QB, WR and CB for the Tarblooders. Ogundari rushed for over 1,100 yards averaging over 9-tards per carry during an injury plagued season where he missed four games.
  • Genyk has stated publically that he wants his defense to score points, perhaps that is why he signed five DBs. Todd Brown and Everett Barney are Floridians with 4.45/40 speed with Brown choosing the Eagles over UCF, Duke and Syracuse while Barney picked Eastern over Bowling Green & UAB. Chris May is an under-rated DB from Jupiter, FL.
  • Of the three QBs brought in by Eastern, Andy Schmitt from St. Johns, MI is the highest rated prospect. Schmitt threw for nearly 2,000 yards and a 25 TDs as a senior and drew interest from several other MAC schools.

Final Thoughts

When Coach Genyk arrived at EMU last year he constantly stated he wanted this program to have “Motor City” toughness, filled with quality Michigan players mainly from the Detroit area. Genyk certainly has his program entrenched in the Detroit area high schools and landed a superb class especially when you consider EMU’s lack of football tradition. It’s difficult to remember a better class at Eastern than this one over the past 12 to 15 years. Overall this group rates as EXCELENT compared to other MAC schools and if Genyk and his staff continue to bring in players like this, it won’t be long until they are a true contender in the west division.
